With new projects on the horizon, TerpTheatre is looking to expand its team of stage interpreters specializing in the shadowed style. Our audition process begins with a resume. We will then invite select interpreters to prepare for a live audition, and to meet the TerpTheatre team.  New TerpTheatre team members will be trained in our shadow-interpreting approach, in preparation for the 2013-2014 season.

Live Audition: April 13
If selected, you will receive audition materials on April 6. The materials will include one monologue and one song for you to translate and practice prior to auditions.  Auditions will take place in the Detroit area. Alternate Audition Method: Interpreters who can’t attend the live auditions will have the chance to submit materials via video (although this is not optimal).

Initial training is likely to take place within several weeks of auditions.


Do I have to be a seasoned interpreter? Do I have to have acting experience?
We often ‘build’ our team members from interpreters who have little or no prior theatre experience. A passion for ASL and translation is a key ingredient that is found in novice and seasoned interpreters alike. We welcome resumes from all interpreters with this passion.
Are only Michigan interpreters eligible?
The majority of our current performance work is in southeast Michigan. We are looking for interpreters who live within a reasonable driving distance from Detroit. (Our current team members live within a 70 mile radius of downtown Detroit.)
What are the certification requirements?
TerpTheatre’s method involves translation, memorization and performance. Although this may exempt our work from state qualification requirements, we seek interpreters with either NIC or BEI certification.  We will also accept resumes from interpreters who have an upcoming test date for either assessment.
What is the commitment?
This work is very rewarding – but, doing it right requires translation, preparation and rehearsal. Most of our preparation is in the evenings and/or weekends. Our team is large enough to allow for ‘off time’ during the season, but everyone commits to at least one show annually. We are compensated for our work on a flat rate per production, not an hourly basis.
