Danny McDougall, PhD

Danny began interpreting on stage in 1985. His thirty-five years experience shadow interpreting on stage spans over 100 theatre productions. He has toured nationally with a comedian, and occasionally acts without interpreting.

Danny has enjoyed a varied career in the nonprofit sector, including positions at Deaf CAN!, the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, and City Connect Detroit. A graduate of the Sign Language Studies program at Madonna University, Dan is a nationally certified interpreter (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf – CSC) with a broad range of off-stage interpreting experience.

Danny returned to Madonna University in 2007 as the chairperson of the Sign Language Studies department. He is the author of all content on Terptheatre.com, and he designs and maintains the technical aspects of all of TerpTheatre’s website and blogs—which have been quoted in media and academic articles. Terptheatre.com is the first online resource dedicated to theatre interpreting: our first posts go back to 1998.

Danny’s PhD research explored the production of space by sign language interpreters in the theatre (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland). Previously, he completed his PhD coursework in the Department of Interpretation and Translation at Gallaudet University.
