Why I’m Producing SA on Broadway
The growing momentum of Deaf West Theatre’s exuberant production of Spring Awakening has lead the show to Broadway for a limited engagement from September 27, 2015 through January 9, 2016. The production began just over a year ago in Los Angeles, at Inner-City Arts, with a capacity of just 90 seats each performance. After selling out to crowds that included celebrities (even the show’s composer, Duncan Sheik), Deaf West’s innovative version of Spring Awakening moved to the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts , in Beverly Hills — with a seating capacity of more than 500.
The Broadway production will find its home at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, on West 47th street. An audition notice lists July 8-10 for New York auditions, and rehearsals will begin in August. Previews are set to being on September 8.
The LA productions included a cast of 27 Deaf and hearing actors, including Daniel Durant, who starred alongside Garrett Zuercher in TerpTheatre/Oakland University’s Police Deaf Near Far. Zuercher also starred in a successful Deaf West production: We was the lead in the tour of Big River, which first landed on Broadway in 2003.
News of the Broadway run of Spring Awakening leaked with the audition notice, and then was confirmed through several sources. Theatre and media blogs are burning up with anticipation for the new production (see “What Others Are Saying”, above). Tickets are currently available and are expected to be gobbled up quickly!

Danny McDougall, PhD, CSC — “Dr. Danny” — owns and manages TerpTheatre. Since 1986, he has interpreted in hundreds of plays, musicals and other performances on stage – most in the shadowed style. He teaches and lectures on the theory and practice of theatre interpreting. Danny is the chair of Sign Language Studies at Madonna University, and holds a PhD in Translation and Interpretation from Heriot-Watt University – where his dissertation explored the relationship between space and meaning during interpreted theatre performances.
